How to File a DMCA Takedown on Shopify

Shopify doesn't run a marketplace, it hosts over a million independent stores, and when one of them steals your product photos, artwork, or entire site copy, the takedown notice goes to Shopify as the host. Shopify accepts DMCA notices through an online form and follows the standard notice-and-counter-notice process.

Before you start

  • Confirm the store is on Shopify, look for "Powered by Shopify" in the footer, a myshopify.com URL, or Shopify assets in the page source.
  • Proof of ownership, links to your original store, portfolio, or files with creation dates.
  • The exact URL of every infringing page or image. Homepage links aren't enough; Shopify needs to locate each item.
  • Your contact details, these are forwarded to the merchant with your notice.

Step 1: Open Shopify's DMCA notice form

Go to https://www.shopify.com/legal/tools/report-an-issue/dmca, Shopify's copyright infringement notice tool, linked from its DMCA policy at shopify.com/legal/dmca. The form walks you through the notice requirements so nothing gets left out.

Step 2: Identify yourself as the rights owner

State whether you're filing as the copyright owner or an authorized agent, and provide your full name, address, and email. Remember that Shopify forwards the complete notice to the store owner, so use professional, accurate contact details.

Step 3: Describe the original work

Explain what was copied, product photography, artwork, written descriptions, a full store design, and link to where the original lives. If your work predates the copy (an archived page, a dated portfolio post), mention it; it makes the reviewer's job easy.

Step 4: List every infringing URL

Paste the direct URL of each infringing product page, image, or page on the offending store. Cloned stores often lift dozens of assets, and Shopify acts on the specific locations you identify, so be exhaustive.

Step 5: Sign the statements and submit

Confirm the DMCA declarations, good-faith belief that the use is unauthorized, accuracy of the notice, and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf. Add your electronic signature, submit, and save the confirmation for your records.

What happens after you file

Shopify reviews the notice and, if it's complete, removes or disables the reported material and forwards your notice to the merchant. The merchant can file a counter-notification; if they do, Shopify may restore the content after roughly 10 to 14 business days unless you show you've filed a court action. Stores that rack up repeated valid complaints face termination under Shopify's repeat infringer policy.

One quirk of Shopify theft: cloned stores frequently reappear on fresh domains days after a takedown, often run by the same operator. Keep screenshots of everything, re-check periodically, and refile as needed. If that cycle is eating your time, Rulta is a done-for-you takedown service that monitors for copies of your work and handles the filing and follow-up across Shopify and beyond.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a store runs on Shopify?

Look for a myshopify.com address, "Powered by Shopify" in the footer, or check the page source for cdn.shopify.com. If the store is hosted elsewhere, Shopify cannot act on it.

Will the store owner see my complaint?

Yes. Shopify forwards your notice, including your name and contact information, to the merchant. That is standard under the DMCA.

How long does Shopify take to remove content?

Complete notices are typically processed within a few business days. Shopify emails you when content is removed or if information is missing.

Can the merchant get the content restored?

Yes, by filing a counter-notification. Shopify may restore the material after roughly 10 to 14 business days unless you notify them that you have filed a court action.

What if the whole store is a clone of mine?

List every infringing URL, product pages, images, and copied pages. Shopify removes identified material, and merchants with repeated valid complaints can lose their store entirely.
